Note: Just used the actors’ names in the synopsis because I figured we should all have the creative freedom to name our own characters. I’d probably be playing the male role. They met at a grocery store on Christmas Eve. She had no family to spend it with. He simply chose to be alone. They were both going for the last can of gravy on the shelf. After some bantering and playful flirting, Michael simply invited Dianna back to his place, claiming that no one should have to spend the holidays alone if they didn’t want to. For some reason, she agreed.
They became friends, first, because she’d just gotten out of a bad relationship. He didn’t mind, though. He wasn’t looking for a relationship anyway. Dianna worked at the local hospital. Michael didn’t know that. When he showed up for treatment one Tuesday and she’d been sitting at the nurse’s station, he’d simply told her he was there for another reason. Visiting a friend, he’d said. She had no reason not to believe him. He switched treatment centers so that it wouldn’t happen again and they continued their friendship. And, as it goes, the friendship developed into something more. They didn’t label it. They weren’t in high school and had no use for labels like “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”, but they went out to dinner, saw movies, and reaped the benefits.
Slowly, things got more serious and with each passing day Michael wondered if he should tell her…explain that he hadn’t suddenly decided to shave his head or that she wasn’t imagining him losing weight. He had cancer. But then she told him she was pregnant. How was he supposed to tell her now?
